Ganpishi 雁皮紙 - Natural - Deckled edges
(*) The ganpi vine used to produce this paper comes from the mountains very close to Nanjō. This particularly rare paper is a Torinoko ganpi, weighing 35 to 40 gsm, with dimensions of approx. 99x45 to 100x45 cm.

This paper is crafted with clay—a thin layer that provides its highly distinctive "moist" texture.

It features a superb, subtle matte finish. Though as dark as a sheet of paper, it allows for exceptional line definition. It offers a truly authentic feel.

Its properties: excellent lightfastness, and it serves as the preferred base paper for gold and silver leafing.

Widely used in Japan for the conservation of National Treasures, the combination of ganpi and clay offers the safest assurance for optimal longevity. It is completely pest-free.

The quality of this paper relies on ancestral papermaking expertise and the use of locally harvested wild ganpi. Tanino Takenobu (1935~), father of the current master Masanobu, was designated a Living National Treasure for his expertise and the creation of this unique paper.

Displayed simply as it is, this paper will also look magnificent when framed. A highly sought-after collector's paper.

Sumi and Calligraphy: To smooth out any rippling or wavy writing, the ganpi sheet can be backed onto another sheet of paper using a technique called Urauchi.

An ideal medium for printmaking and calligraphy, it is also perfectly suited for fine art photographic printing.
