Hosokawa paper is a traditional Japanese paper that is handcrafted in the city of Yoshino, located in the Nara Prefecture of Japan. The Hosokawa paper-making technique dates back over 1,300 years and is considered one of the oldest paper-making techniques in the world.
The process of making Hosokawa paper is highly artisanal and utilizes high-quality natural materials such as mulberry (kozo), hemp (asa), and gentian leaf (gampi). The fibers are beaten with wooden mallets until they are soft enough to be transformed into paper. Then, the fibers are mixed with water and filtered through a special bamboo sieve called a "su."
The resulting paper is then sun-dried and hand-polished to give a smooth and uniform surface. The process of making Hosokawa paper is highly demanding and takes a lot of time, often several weeks to produce a high-quality sheet of paper.
Hosokawa paper is known for its soft and silky texture, its tear resistance, and its durability. It is used for many types of art objects, such as paintings, calligraphy, art books, fans, and lampshades. Today, Hosokawa paper is appreciated worldwide for its beauty and exceptional quality.
